Morondava is one of the most photogenic corners of Madagascar. In a few days you can photograph the Avenue of the Baobabs at sunrise and sunset, lemurs and the fossa in Kirindy Forest, fishermen and pirogues on the coast, and the limestone needles of the Tsingy. Our team lives here, and we often organise private trips for photographers. Here is what we have learned about where to be, and when.
The Avenue of the Baobabs: Sunrise, Sunset and Night
The Avenue is the classic shot, and it changes completely with the light. At sunset the trees turn black against an orange sky and the dusty road glows; this is also when most visitors arrive. At sunrise the light comes from the other side, the air is calm and you often have the place almost to yourself. On clear, moonless nights in the dry season, the Milky Way rises above the baobabs.
- Sunset: arrive at least 45 minutes early to choose your spot.
- Sunrise: leave Morondava before dawn; the drive takes about 30 minutes.
- Night: bring a tripod and a head torch; plan for a moonless night.
- Reflections: after rain, the pools beside the road mirror the trees.

Kirindy Forest: Lemurs, Fossa and Night Life
Kirindy is the best place in western Madagascar for wildlife photography. Early morning is the most active time: sifakas, brown lemurs and many birds move through the dry forest, and the fossa is sometimes seen around the camp, especially from October to December. After dark, a guided night walk reveals mouse lemurs, chameleons and geckos.
- A telephoto lens (200–400 mm) is the most useful for lemurs and birds.
- A macro lens or close-focus setting is ideal for chameleons at night.
- Respect the animals: no touching, and follow your guide's advice on flash and lights.
- Stay one night in or near Kirindy to be in the forest at dawn.

Betania, Pirogues and Coastal Life
Across the mangroves from Morondava, the fishing village of Betania offers a different kind of photography: Vezo pirogues with their square sails, fishermen coming back in the morning, and daily life by the sea. Always ask before photographing people; a smile and a few words go a long way, and your guide can help.
Tsingy de Bemaraha
If you have four days or more, the Tsingy adds dramatic landscapes: razor-sharp limestone pinnacles, suspension bridges and deep canyons. A wide-angle lens is useful on the viewpoints, and a light camera bag makes the climbing easier.

When to Come
The dry season from April to November is the best time, with reliable access to Kirindy and the Tsingy and clear skies for sunsets and stars. The Tsingy is usually only accessible during this season. The rainy months bring green landscapes and dramatic clouds around the baobabs, but some tracks become difficult.
A Private Photo Tour, at Your Pace
Photographers need time and flexibility: being in the right place at the right light, waiting for an animal, returning to a spot. With a private 4x4, a driver and a local guide, we plan the days around the light rather than a fixed timetable.
- Departure times set around sunrise and sunset.
- Extra time at the Avenue and in Kirindy.
- Drones: authorisation is required in Madagascar and rules can change — ask us before you travel.
Planning a photography trip around Morondava? Tell us your dates, your interests (landscapes, wildlife, people, stars) and how many days you have — we will design the plan around the best light.
