Morondava is a small town on Madagascar's west coast, and it is the starting point for most of the island's famous sights: the Avenue of the Baobabs, Kirindy Forest, the Tsiribihina River and the Tsingy de Bemaraha. Our team is based here, and the question we hear most often is simple: how do I get to Morondava from Antananarivo? There are three ways, and each one suits a different kind of trip.
Option 1: Fly from Antananarivo (Fastest)
Domestic flights connect Antananarivo (TNR) and Morondava (MOQ) in about one hour. It is by far the quickest way, and the best choice if you only have a few days in the west. Flights are operated by Madagascar's national airline and do not run every day of the week, so check the schedule before you fix the rest of your plans.
- Flight time: about 1 hour.
- Flights are not daily, and schedules and times can change at short notice — keep a free half-day around your flights.
- Morondava airport is a few kilometres from the town centre. We can meet you on arrival.
- Some flights also link Morondava with Toliara (Tuléar) in the south-west.
Option 2: By Road via Antsirabe and Miandrivazo
The road trip is long, but it is also a way to see the highlands change into the dry west. The route follows the RN7 south from Antananarivo to Antsirabe, then turns west through Miandrivazo, one of the hottest towns in Madagascar, and down to the coast. The total distance is about 650 km.
- Antananarivo → Antsirabe: about 170 km on the RN7.
- Antsirabe → Miandrivazo → Morondava: about 480 km, with long good sections after Miandrivazo.
- By private car: a very long day of driving. Most travellers prefer to stop for a night in Antsirabe or Miandrivazo.
- By taxi-brousse (shared minibus): companies such as Cotisse and Soatrans run the route. Expect around 12 hours or more, with very early departures.
Option 3: Down the Tsiribihina River (The Adventure)
This is our favourite way to arrive. Instead of driving all the way, you leave the road at Miandrivazo and float down the Tsiribihina River by pirogue for two to three days. You camp on sandbanks, pass Sakalava villages and look for lemurs, chameleons and birds along the banks. At Belo-sur-Tsiribihina a 4x4 takes you to Kirindy Forest and on to Morondava, often with a sunset at the Avenue of the Baobabs.

Which Option Should You Choose?
- Short on time: fly both ways and spend your days at the baobabs, Kirindy and the Tsingy.
- On a budget: taxi-brousse one way, flight back to save a long day.
- Looking for an experience: arrive by the Tsiribihina River and fly back to Antananarivo.
- Continuing south: from Morondava you can carry on along the wild west coast to Toliara by 4x4.

Once You Are in Morondava
Morondava itself is small and easy to explore on foot. The Avenue of the Baobabs is about 20 km away, and Kirindy Forest about 60 km — both need a vehicle, and Kirindy and the Tsingy need a 4x4. The simplest plan is a sunset at the baobabs on your first evening, then a day on the coast at Betania and Kimony.
